| Resources to assist in Newspaper research |

| The sheer volume of newspaper print in existence makes it impossible to put even a fraction of one percent online. The best that can be hoped for are indexes of the papers and even this is a daunting task. A few papers, like The Times, do have a comprehensive index from 1790, however even this is not available on-line and it is priced so that only institutions can purchase the database. |

| Newspaper Library Catalogue |
| The British Library Newspaper Library, to give its full title, is the paramount resource for newspaper research. Although you cannot access the actual newspapers online, this site has a full catalogue of the library's holdings. The site allows you to search for papers by name or by location of publication. | The British Library is the parent of the Newspaper Library but it does hold many additional sources. The catalogue provides a means of checking if an ancestor wrote and published and book or item in a journal. [blpc.bl.uk/] |

| London, Belfast and Edinburgh Gazettes |
| The London, Edinburgh, and Belfast Gazettes are the official newspapers of record in the United Kingdom. Several legal notices, including insolvency notices, are required by law to be published in the London. Awards from the OBE to a knighthood are announced in the Gazette.
