Amazing discoveries
Newspapers contain a great deal of information that may be of benefit to those interested in Family History. They can add human interest to what is otherwise just a list of names.
In the days before the telephone, radio and television the newspaper played a big part in keeping people informed of what was going on in their town, district, county and country.
The things that people did want to read about were crimes, thefts and murders, and interesting deaths.
Cast of thousands

Important revelations
There are many events concerning your ancestors that may have been reported in the newspaper at the time.
Births, marriages and deaths   For the more important personages such events would have appeared in the local newspaper. The marriage could be accompanied with a report, giving details of all the guest, the outfits the bride and bridesmaids were wearing, and where they went on honeymoon.
Obituaries can also be a good source of information on the person and relations who attended, and sometimes there may even be details of the will.
If your ancestor died in unusual circumstances, or the death certificate indicate an inquest was held, then there could well be a report of the inquest in the paper. Inquests were a form of entertainment which everyone would attend if they could.
Law and order   Not all our ancestors have been saintly. Some have strayed from the path and others have been victims. Newspapers report the crimes, the pursuit, the capture and the trial often in vivid detail.
Military service   The major wars saw a large number of soldiers, sailors, airmen and civilians injured or killed. Reports frequently appeared in the local newspaper, often together with a photograph.
