1901 census page reference

Sorry but following changes to the 1901 census web site the Page Reference now appears to be scrambled to prevent applications like mine from functioning.

The 1901 census does not display the piece or folio references during the initial free search. You can, however, view a Page Reference by placing the mouse over the yellow graphic in the Image column. The reference will be displayed on the status bar.

This small application will allow you to convert the page reference into the Piece and Folio reference you will need to view the entry on the fiche at the PRO and other record offices.

To generate the Piece reference you can either enter the PageId into the Page Reference field or you can use the Right Click/ Copy Shortcut method and paste into the Page Reference field. Click GO.

If you are undertaking a one-name study or researching large families then you may be interested in an application [Word 97 and VBA] I have developed which will extract the relevant information from the multiple searches and generate a comma-delimited version which will incorporate the piece and folio details as well as the census district information.
Download the zip file and unpack it - the default directory is 1901census. To use the application just open the Word document 1901census.doc and follow the instructions (select enable macros).

Help

If you having a problem seeing the PageId. It should appear on the status bar at the bottom of your browser. If nothing is displayed then the option may be turned off. For Internet Explorer go to the View menu and ensure the Status Bar option is ticked.

At the start of each district were a number of introduction pages giving details and a summary of the district. These were numbered and given folio references. To cater for these unfilmed pages it is necessary to give a range of folio numbers.

The folio numbers for Royal Navy ships at sea [RG13/5325 to 5335] may be too low. This is caused by the enumeration books being too big and this left blank pages at the end. These pages were assigned folio numbers but were unfilmed so not assigned PageIds. For more information refer to Jeffery Knaggs' Royal Navy ships page
Jeffery has also started work on indexing the various institutions that appear in the census. Some of the data has been collated into the above application. For up to date information check out Jeffery's Institutions page
